GLAAD, the LGBT activist organization dedicated to promoting assertive images of the community in the media, announced today that it will honor pop icon and multiple Grammy Award winner Britney Spears at the 29th annual GLAAD Media Awards to be held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles next Thursday, April 12, 2018.

The GLAAD Media Awards honor media for fair, accurate and inclusive representations of LGBTQ people and issues. The GLAAD Media Awards also fund GLAAD’s work to accelerate acceptance of the LGBTQ community.

GLAAD will present Britney Spears with the Vanguard Award, which is presented to media professionals who have made a significant difference in promoting LGBTQ equality and acceptance. Vangard Award recipients include Jennifer Lopez, Cher, Kerry Washington, Elizabeth Taylor, Elizabeth Taylor, Whoopi Goldberg, Antonio Banderas, Drew Barrymore, Janet Jackson, Demi Lovato, Eric McCormack, Josh Hutcherson and Patricia Arquette.

The film, directed by the Italian Luca Guadagnino and scripted by the prestigious James Ivory (a director specializing in period stories such as “Maurice”, which also tells a gay love story, albeit in the context of Victorian and Edwardian England), draws heavily on the nostalgia imbued in the book on which it is based: the best-seller of the same name by André Aciman.

They seek each other out, they find each other, they reject each other, they enjoy each other, they converse, they distance themselves from each other, they desire each other. An intense relationship (in which sometimes Marzia -Esther Garrel-, Elio’s friend-lover, will get involved), which will mark the life of both, as will be seen in “Encuéntrame” (2019), the book in which Aciman offers a continuation to the story of both.

So I want to start off by saying that following the #callmebyyourname posts has been my saving grace over the last two weeks. I live in NYC and have seen the movie 4 times now and, like many of you, have fallen in love with this story. I have seen so many intellectual posts from various blogs about all the moments from the book and the film and I have loved reading everyone’s opinions! I thought I would add some of mine in!
